This special appearance by the award-winning Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra features the CD release of the commissioned work, Port Chicago.

Port Chicago is a jazz suite written in 14 sections. The composition is the result of a commission from the Equal Justice Society to honor the black sailors killed in 1947 at the Port Chicago Naval Base near Oakland, California.

The music is an abstract representation chronicling the story of these African American sailors from the swing clubs in Oakland to grappling with the injustices of segregated life. Music will also include "Ella - A Tribute To Ella Fitzgerald - Ballet for Jazz Orchestra," that was composed for the Oakland Ballet, and excerpts from Duke Ellington's "Black, Brown & Beige."

The MSJO is comprised of today's best Bay Area musicians and is a high powered and innovative group. Marcus Shelby is an award winning composer, arranger, educator and bassist. His credits include original scoring for film, theater and dance as well as jazz composition for his own groups. He is nationally recognized for his innovative and collaborative approach to composing and arranging for text, the visual arts, dance and theater.
