San Francisco Reception for EJS Board Chair, Professor Charles Ogletree

On June 17, friends of the Equal Justice Society joined staff and Board members at the EJS office for a book-signing and reception in honor of Prof. Charles Ogletree, the Jesse Climenko Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and Chair of the EJS Board of Directors.

Prof. Ogletree's new book, With All Deliberate Speed: Reflections on the First Half-Century of Brown v. Board of Education, received a warm and enthusiastic response among the nearly one hundred guests at the reception, which also served as an opening for EJS' new offices in San Francisco's Financial District.

The reception, preceded by an Executive Committee meeting of the EJS Board of Directors, included remarks and a brief reading by Prof. Ogletree. In commenting on the importance of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, Professor Ogletree shared, "This book is ultimately a testament to hope. I don't think we have the liberty of failing to take on the challenges to move the successes forward of Thurgood Marshall and so many who did so much with so little at a time of repressive resistance to integration and equality."

Coverage of Prof. Ogletree's tour through the San Francisco Bay Area included an extensive article in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The reception drew a wide cross-section of public interest and civil rights advocates from across the San Francisco Bay Area, including students, journalists and lawyers from both the private and public sectors.

The Equal Justice Society is a national organization of scholars, advocates and concerned individuals advancing creative legal strategies and public policy for enduring social change. As heirs of the innovative legal and political strategists of Brown v. Board of Education, EJS will marshal our forces to defeat the right wing assault on social and racial justice. Our goal is to reshape jurisprudence to ensure that the rights of all are expanded, rather than diminished, by our courts and policy makers.
