Staff/Board News and Notes: Welcome New Board and Staff Members, Policy Intern Leaves to Join Legislative Staff

EJS welcomes Anthony Solana, an Associate at Morrison & Foerster to the Board of Directors, and congratulates policy intern Taina Gomez as she leaves the organization to join the legislative district office of Hon. California State Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, 14th Assembly District. Keith Kamisugi joins EJS as Associate Director of Communications & Development.

Anthony Solana is an Associate in the Litigation Department at the San Francisco offices of Morrison & Foerster LLP and has been a long-standing supporter of the Equal Justice Society. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and the UCLA School of Law where he was Associate Editor of the Chicano/Latino Law Review, Solana is also the author of A Guide to the Law School Admissions Process for People of Color, (2003, www.forpeopleofcolor.org). In 2003, he joined a team of UCLA law students in submitting an amicus curiae brief supporting the University of Michigan's affirmative action program before the U.S. Supreme Court in Grutter v. Bollinger (University of Michigan). His views on equal education opportunity have been published in the Wall Street Journal, The California Law Review and LA Weekly. Taina Ivania Gomez, who joined EJS last Fall as a public policy intern, has now joined the legislative district office of Hon. California State Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, 14th Assembly District, where she will assist in the development of public policy and legislation. While at EJS Gomez conducted an extensive survey analysis of public policy programs conducted in the civil rights and public interest community, identifying best practices as well as unmet needs in the arena. Her analysis will be used in furthering development of the EJS public policy program. While at EJS, Gomez also played an important role in reaching out to key legislators and policy-makers including Assemblywoman Hancock who participated as a keynote speaker at a joint reception held in January 2005 with EJS and the American Constitution Society, in San Francisco.

Keith Kamisugi, EJS information technology and web consultant, as well as a nationally-recognized public affairs specialist, has joined the EJS staff as Associate Director of Communications & Development. Since 2003, Kamisugi has been responsible for the design and stewardship of the EJS website. He has also been instrumental in assisting the management of EJS communications and media affairs for the last year. Thanks in part to a capacity-building grant from The Ford Foundation, in his new role Kamisugi will lead EJS electronic-based fund and membership development efforts in addition to his ongoing role with media relations management.

The Equal Justice Society is a national organization of scholars, advocates and concerned individuals advancing innovative legal strategies and public policy for enduring social change. We generate critical analysis on issues of race and social justice through research, public education and bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. Our goal is to reshape jurisprudence to ensure that the rights of all are expanded, rather than diminished, by our courts and policy makers.
