USF Law School Chapter Creative Art Show Features Dynamic Works
on Social Justice Theme
On
February 3rd, the USF School of Law chapter of the Equal Justice
Society hosted a reception to launch the 2nd Annual Creative Justice
Art Show at Kendrick Hall on the USF School of Law campus, featuring
art dealing with social justice and human rights.
A wide
array of work dealing with immigrant rights, environmental justice,
the Iraq War, homelessness, anti-queer violence, and women's rights
was warmly received by a larger-than-expected crowd. Artists exhibited
in painting, photography, mixed-media, sculpture, video and spoken
word.

The
event was a benefit for the California Coalition for Women Prisoners,
a nonprofit organization advocating for the rights of incarcerated
women in the state. The Coalition also participated in the show
itself, providing three provocative works produced by women prisoners.
Over $1,200 was raised at the show for the Coalition.
USF
EJS Co-Chair Jerry Heppler said that the response from the artistic
community was enthusiastic, with the number of entries nearly
tripling from last year. "We were pleasantly surprised with
the large number of artists vying for spots in the show, and curating
the exhibit proved a formidable challenge," Heppler noted.
"We interpreted the social justice theme very broadly, including
subject matter from the broadest possible spectrum of human and
civil rights."
At
the reception, Jeffrey Brand, Dean of the USF School of Law, applauded
the innovative art show and introduced EJS Director of Law and
Public Policy Kimberly Thomas Rapp. "We are so proud of the
EJS law students for recognizing the importance of the arts in
the movement for social justice, and for your commitment to giving
voice to those without access to power," said Thomas Rapp.

The
2nd Annual Creative Justice Art Show was co-sponsored by the Equal
Justice Society, California Lawyers for the Arts, the USF Student
Bar Association, and nearly a dozen USF School of Law student
organizations. The Creative Justice Art Show, originally conceived
by students from the USF Amnesty International group to highlight
artwork focusing on issues of social and political justice, has
been a project of the USF Equal Justice Society since the fall
of 2005.
